About the role

Are you passionate about building best in class underwriting technology? The role seeks an experienced professional with the ability to execute underwriting rules design through coding and authoring. Your primary focus will be on developing and refining underwriting rules that are pivotal to our state-of-the-art life insurance underwriting engine.

Additionally, you will contribute to the labeling of ground truth data, which is essential for our predictive underwriting models. Your work will have a direct impact on our customers, partners and our overall business, and you will play a key role in some of the exciting transformation projects that are underway.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Co-author an automated underwriting rules ecosystem for the risk assessment process.
  • Responsible for maintaining and improving the underlying rules within the engine
  • Maintain and update underwriting criteria that is systematically performed by the system for current products that are sold and/or administered through Ethos
  • Continued review of evidence and synthesization of underwriting data from all sources
  • Work with Head of Underwriting Strategies to assess business risk for changes to underwriting guidelines
  • Solidify protocols for rule and system enhancements
  • Maintain appropriate documentation for underwriting criteria, guidelines and workflows
  • Ability to prioritize system decisions based on business need, business case and ROI
  • Ensure end-user proficiency with new systems, programs, and applications across departments through onboarding training and regular updates
  • To serve as a technical liaison between the Underwriting Strategy team and the IT team
  • Serve as an underwriting rules expert for the Underwriting Strategy team
  • Responsible for pre- and post- prod testing of underwriting updates, rules, and data sources
  • Foster and encourage an environment of psychological safety
  • Participate in the labeling of ground truth data, enhancing the accuracy and predictive power of our underwriting models.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • 3-5+ years of life new business underwriting and case management experience
  • Extensive experience with underwriting rules engines and rules management
  • Comfortable working in an agile environment and leveraging systems such as JIRA
  • An understanding of data and models in the underwriting process
  • The ability to communicate results and needs among multiple parties
  • A record of identifying opportunities and quickly delivering solutions
  • Desire to be a team player in a dynamic environment
  • An obsession with the customer and ability to challenge the status quo
  • Experience in ownership of end-to-end unit testing process

Preferred Qualifications

  • SQL/Python
  • Background in medical encoding or similar field related to life or health insurance, with an understanding of medical terminology and its application in life or health insurance domains.
  • Familiarity with data labeling processes for machine learning models is a bonus.
